Weekend Wine Tasting Guide for Lovingston VA

I was able to spend a weekend in Nelson County VA, which is known for its variety of wineries, breweries, and distilleries! I chose to focus on a specific area within Nelson County – specifically the Lovingston region that surrounds Highway 29. We stayed at the beautiful Orchard House Bed & Breakfast, which was a delightful treat in itself. The owners are so kind, and great at what they do! I was so excited to start this trip (and also a little late) that I got a speeding ticket on the way up, so watch out for that in the area. But here is my itinerary for this weekend wine tasting guide for Lovingston VA:

Orchard House B&B

Orchard House B&B is a spectacular Bed & Breakfast located right off of Highway 29 in Lovingston VA. They have beautiful grounds, with lots of open space and grapevines of their own. There is a variety of relaxing places to enjoy an afternoon with a bottle of local wine. The owners are so kind and can offer many different recommendations for things to do in the area. Plus, their daily breakfast is outstanding – you won’t want to miss it!

The Bed & Breakfast is separated into two buildings. The Orchard House is the main building and the Farmhouse is a secondary building with 3 additional rooms plus a large kitchen and living room. We stayed in the White Cascade room in the Farmhouse. It was nice having a lot of privacy, but also being walking distance to the main building. I could not recommend a stay at the Orchard House Bed & Breakfast more!  Everything was truly spectacular.

Delfosse Vineyard & Winery

This is the second time that I’ve worked with Delfosse Vineyard & Winery. Adrienne and Mike are such great people and business owners. If you only go to one winery in the area… pick Delfosee. Not just because they have great wine, but their kindness and love for their business shine through into every aspect of their estate.

Brent Manor Vineyards

Brent Manor Vineyards is a new, boutique winery in the Lovingston area. The owner is from Portugal and has been making wine for a long time as a family hobby. Recently, he decided to open Brent Manor Vineyards as an escape from his office job. I did not taste one wine that I disliked. The views are incredible and I definitely plan to bring a group of friends and family back for a tasting at Brent Manor!

Wood Ridge Farm Brewery

Wood Ridge Farm Brewery is an extremely unique find in the heart of Virginia. The brewery has a vibe that is a mix between a treehouse and the Caribbean. It is truly an excellent place to come with friends and relax outside.

Their food truck is also incredible – I had their boneless wings and potato skins! The staff was very friendly and the sunset is absolutely gorgeous. My favorite beer was the Honey Gold – but they definitely have something for everyone to enjoy.

Blue Mountain Barrel House & Food Truck

Blue Mountain is a pretty big name in the Nelson County area. I’ve worked with their Blue Mountain Brewery location in the past – which is a full restaurant. This time, I was able to enjoy the Blue Mountain Barrel House which is more of a brewery/bar style location.

The Barrel House has plenty of outdoor seating and often offers music and entertainment on the lawn. But my favorite part of the entire experience was eating at their Blue Mountain Food Truck. The Gouda Mac & Cheese topped with bacon changed my life. Mac & Cheese will never be the same. 🙂

Virginia Distillery Company

This was actually my third visit to Virginia Distillery Company – with good reason. While my true passion is wine, I am a lover of a good whisky – and Virginia Distillery Co. has crafted one of the most excellent whiskeys in the world.

Their building is breathtaking; you will notice their attention to detail immediately. Also, the knowledge and hospitality shown during each visit has always been great! You can choose to taste their variety of whiskeys neat or you can enjoy a tasting flight of seasonal cocktails. I personally always prefer to try the cocktails; they’ve always been fresh, fun, and delicious!

Lovingston Cafe

Lovingston Cafe is a small, local eatery with a fun small-town feel. They have a huge menu – We tried their BBQ sandwich, Rodeo Burger (topped with fried onions, BBQ sauce, bacon, and cheddar cheese), and potato skins. Everything was great – but the rodeo burger was next level! I’m craving one now sitting here writing this review! I highly recommend Lovingston Cafe if you find yourself in the area. It is an adorable hole-in-the-wall that you won’t want to miss!

Lovingston Winery

Lovingston Winery is one of the much smaller wineries in the area. However, their wine holds up well in this area of heavy competition. Their tasting room is very small, but they do offer a few spots both inside and outside if you wanted to enjoy a glass or a bottle on site. I was particularly impressed by the quality of red wine.
