Genesis 1:4, Word by Word: An Interlinear Study

Genesis 1:4 interlinear study

Genesis 1:4

“And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.”

If I had never heard Genesis 1:4 before, and all I knew was what these Hebrew words are telling me, how would I say this?

God observed the light He had created and approved of it as good, pleasing, beautiful, and beneficial. Then God established a distinction between the good light and the darkness.

Background and Breakdown:

I still can’t help but feel like there are red flashing lights around the fact that the darkness was already there in this account.

It makes me picture Genesis 1:1–2 as God creating the heavens and the earth, with the earth still unformed, unfilled, covered in deep waters, and completely dark. Then everything that follows is God bringing light, order, distinction, life, and fullness into that initial condition… and repeatedly calling what He brings forth good.

But that raises another question for me…

If God calls the light good, but the darkness was already there, what exactly was the darkness?

Was it bad?

Was it evil?

Or was it simply… indifferent? Just part of the initial condition of creation, before God began ordering and filling it?

I don’t think Genesis 1:4 answers that question yet.

And honestly, I’m okay with that.

Because now I really want to see what happens next.
