Small Town Travel Series
Things to do in Abingdon VA
The town of Abingdon has plenty to offer visitors and it has a very walkable downtown area. We stayed at The Martha Washington Inn & Spa, which boasts of historic charm with modern amenities and perks. While staying downtown catch a show at The Barter Theatre (the nations longest-running professional theatre) or walk down to Wolf Hills Brewing Company for a delicious taste of locally made beer. But what you definitely don’t want to miss is a short drive to Abingdon Vineyards! So, please enjoy my recommendations for “Things to do in Abingdon VA.”

The Martha Washington Inn & Spa
As previously mentioned, The Martha Washington Inn & Spa boasts of historic charm with modern amenities and perks. The architecture and grounds are stunning and the rooms have just the right combination of old mixed with modern. Although we didn’t get to enjoy it ourselves, The Martha Washington has a beautiful pool area (both indoor and outdoor).
Also, I think it’s worth noting that we were extremely impressed with the man working at the concierge desk. He helped us get everything out of our car and took it all up to our room and laid it out nicely because we were in a hurry to get to our first destination.
The Sister’s American Grill
We were able to enjoy a fabulous dining experience at The Sister’s American Grill, which is located on-site at The Martha Washington. We started off splitting a bottle of Prosecco. Then, Olivia ordered a fabulous house-made pizza and I ordered a mouth-watering steak.
In addition, hotel guests receive a complimentary breakfast each morning. You can choose from several different options including pancakes, eggs, bacon, potatoes, etc. The breakfast was excellent, and they had great hot coffee!
Abingdon Vineyards
We were absolutely blown away with every single detail at Abingdon Vineyards. Owners, Loren and Elizabeth, absolutely love what they do and it shows in every ounce of the property. They stumbled upon the property while helping friends move from California to Virginia. Something spoke to them and they knew that this was going to be their new home as well!
The wine itself is incredible! I didn’t try anything that I didn’t love (and that is rare). But even more than great wine – Loren, Elizabeth, and the entire staff make you feel welcomed and at home. I promise you won’t leave unimpressed!
Southwest VA Cultural Center and Marketplace
We were pleasantly surprised with the Southwest VA Cultural Center and Marketplace. From just the name, we honestly didn’t know what to expect out of it. However, they offer a huge variety of locally made art, crafts, jewelry, clothing, soaps, etc. Everything that is sold in the Marketplace is made in one of the many counties that make up southwestern Virginia. Also inside is a small cafe’ and stage for musical talent and local events.
Conclusions:
Abingdon, Va should certainly be on your radar – especially if you happen to make it to the nearby areas of Bristol or Marion (as I’ve previously written about). I made a 3-night trip out of all 3 towns and it was an absolute blast! If you have any questions, please feel free to message me.
I’d love for you to follow along for more travel fun @katie.wineandweekends. I hope you enjoyed my recommendations for “Things to do in Abingdon VA.”
