Fine Dining in Williamsburg, VA:

The Trellis Bar and Grill

James and I traveled to Williamsburg, VA to create content for Water Country USA, and you can view my video and blog here. However, our trip was taken to a new level when we had the absolute pleasure of dining at The Trellis Bar and Grill during our one night trip to Williamsburg. The Trellis Bar and Grill is the definition of fine dining in Williamsburg, VA. They specialize in a wide variety of eclectic dishes, and have something to amaze everyone!

We arranged our dinner in advanced, and the management created a special menu for us to highlight! While I love trying new foods and pairings, it is important for me to note that I would have NEVER ordered anything on our menu for myself – and yet it was all absolutely out-of-this-world!

Our Menu:

Aperitif:

To begin our evening at The Trellis Bar and Grill, we enjoyed a house-made Tequila Cup, which is made of tequila, cucumber water, a jalapeño mix, large ice cubes with crushed pepper, and served with cucumber and lime. This is just one of the many craft cocktails that The Trellis has to offer! If you aren’t familiar, an aperitif is simply a pre-meal cocktail that helps to stimulate the appetite.  We enjoyed our Tequila Cup with assorted breads, butter and olive oil.

Appetizer:

This may quite literally be one of the best dishes that I have ever tasted: The Seared Jumbo Sea Scallop which was placed on stacked Johnny cakes and a fried green tomato, topped with country ham and hickory apple relish. Who would have ever imagined that all of those ingredients, when cooked to perfection, would create the most heavenly dish that I have come across to date. This dish was paired excellently with a 2016 Carl Graff Riesling.

Main Courses:

We were able to enjoy two different entrees, which we shared: The Three Grain Bowl and Shrimp and Grits! The Three Grain Bowl is created by taking rice and ancient grains, and topping them with the most beautiful shredded veggies, roasted eggplant, and poached egg. Shrimp and Grits are somewhat self-explanatory. However, The Trellis has elevated this southern classic by adding in crispy bacon, snap peas, and roasted tomatoes and serving it all in a delicious lemon broth! Both of these dishes paired wonderfully with Virginia’s own Upper Shirley Vineyards 2017 Viognier.

Dessert:

We enjoyed two desserts at The Trellis Bar and Grill: One was Death by Chocolate, which is quite literally how it sounds: Layered Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ice Cream and White Chocolate Citrus Truffle. The second was Buttermilk Pie, which is made with a Cornmeal Crust and Fresh Local Blackberries! Both were absolutely phenomenal, but I bet you can guess what my favorite was! 😉

These desserts were paired with a Tera Dora Zinfandel Port. I am not a big fan of port, or any other form of dessert wine for that matter. However, I told James at the beginning of the meal: “If I like this Port that they have picked for us, then this might win the award for the best meal ever.” And guess what? It was the best Port that I have ever tasted! I don’t know that I would order it again, simply as personal preference; but I definitely enjoyed it more than any other Port that I have tried in the past!

Conclusions:

I feel like it goes without saying, but this entire dining experience was nothing short of perfection. If you ever find yourself in the Williamsburg, VA area, you must stop by The Trellis Bar and Grill! They offer everything from delicious craft cocktails, to burgers, to fine entrees – truly something for everyone!

The quality of food and service at The Trellis Bar and Grill is second to none. The managers even had the Chefs sign a copy of our personal menu and gifted it to us to remember the evening. I had it framed, and it now hangs in my office! Trust me, I will be back!

As summer comes to a close for me, I plan to start incorporating some different topics on Wine and Weekends; In between weekend trips that is. Don’t worry, my traveling is not going to cease. However, if there are any questions/topics that you would like to see me cover, please let me know!

As always, thanks for reading about my dining experience at The Trellis Bar and Grill! I hope that I have inspired you to take a trip, or at least enjoy a delicious meal near your own hometown!
